This course will examine the relationship between North America and other parts of the world during the long period from approximately 1550 to 1800. Focusing on the role of oceans in determining the emergence of empires, the course will compare the development of the English, Spanish, and French empires in North America. These nations sought to displace Native Americans inhabitants with western-style imperial governing structures, land use, and social customs. The focus will be on the circulation of people, goods, and ideas across large spaces as well as the trans-oceanic role of pirates, refugees and the slave trade. Course requirements will include class participation, three short papers, and 10-12 page final essay.
