(Fall 2018)

Section Information for Fall 2018

This introductory course surveys major developments in art from the early Renaissance through the twentieth century in Western civilization. In our study of art history we will emphasize the recognition, identification, and analysis of major works of art produced in the mediums of painting, sculpture and architecture, along with their associated styles. These representative works of art will be used to build a basis for understanding the cultures and artistic contexts surrounding Western art. We will work to gain an understanding of what these examples of art and architecture reveal about the cultures and societies that produced them through illustrated lectures, reading assignments, writing exercises, class discussions, a museum visit, and a short research paper focused on one artwork from a DC museum. This course has no prerequisites and welcomes students without previous knowledge of Art History.
