This course surveys the major developments in Latin American art from the pre-Columbian period until the present day in the Andes (Peru and Bolivia) and Mesoamerica (Mexico, Central America). Broadly, this course covers an array of media (painting, sculpture, architecture, earthworks, metalwork, weaving and ceramics, among others) within its historical, political, religious, ideological, and economic contexts. Specifically, in-class lectures, discussions, readings, and museum visits focus on case studies of select regions and their artworks to understand the role of the visual arts within the various cultures of Latin America.
