Section Information for Spring 2023

This course explores developments in the visual arts and architecture in 15th and 16th-century Italy and includes such artists as Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael in central Italy, Giorgione and Titian in Venice, as well as the Mannerist artists such as Pontormo and Parmigianino.  It is partly a chronological survey and partly a thematic exploration of important issues.  Thus, we will juxtapose pagan ideals with Christian rituals, watch as religious narratives are rearranged for divine purposes, and treat most of the works of the Renaissance as they were seen 500 years ago—through the prism of rivalry.
