Section Information for Spring 2022
This course examines European art movements during the long nineteenth century (from the start of the French Revolution in 1789 until the start of World War I in 1914) with a focus on France and Britain. It will present the major art styles and trends, from neoclassicism to symbolism, in relation to the wider social, cultural, political, and economic structures of the period. Nineteenth-century art-historical themes, such as academism and anti-academic trends, nationalism and imperialism, and the role of prints in the romantic notion of the artist as genius, will feature throughout the course. The goal is to provide students with a foundational knowledge and frame of reference of the main artistic movements, artworks, and art-historical trends of nineteenth-century Europe. Instructor: Prof. Saskia Turpijn
