Section Information for Fall 2018
This course will introduce students to the major artistic developments in art produced in the United States and Europe between 1968 and the present. Students will gain fluency with art, artists, and innovations that distinguish this exciting fast-paced time of cultural and artistic change. Students will build an understanding of art's critical issues and theoretical frameworks including post-minimalism, conceptualism, institutional critique, poststructuralism, postmodernism, photography, performance art, subjects of history, identity, globalism, and socially-engaged art. In addition to this foundation, students will acquire research skills as they pursue their interests through an analytical research paper and presentation focused on one artwork in a Washington, DC museum. The course objective is to provide the student with the historical framework and theoretical tools needed to critically evaluate late twentieth-century and more recent twenty-first century art.
