Section Information for Spring 2023
This course introduces students to major developments in art produced in the United States and Europe between 1968 and the present. Students gain fluency with art, artists, and innovations that distinguish this exciting time of fast-paced cultural and artistic change. Students build understandings of art's critical issues and theoretical frameworks including post-minimalism, conceptualism, institutional critique, postmodernism, photography, performance art, subjects of history, identity, and globalism. Through reading assignments, writing exercises, illustrated lectures, class discussions, a Washington DC museum visit, assessments, and an analytical research paper, students acquire the historical framework and theoretical tools needed to critically evaluate late twentieth-century and more recent twenty-first century art. Prerequisites include completion of 24 credits and one course in ARTH or AVT, or permission of instructor.
