Section Information for Fall 2022

This course is the required research seminar for graduate students. The goals of the course are to develop the skills of an historian; produce an article-length research paper that makes an original contribution to knowledge; present this research to the class; and assist other students in their work. Students are bounded by the topic “war and society,” but they may pursue research in any time period of human history and in any geographic location on planet Earth. However, students should be realistic about their own skills, the instructor’s ability to help (I am a 20th century US historian), and the availability of source material. Skills developed in the course include framing questions; identifying and finding source material; analyzing, interpreting, and contextualizing historical documents; historical writing and citation; proof-reading and self-editing; editing and providing constructive feedback on others’ work; preparing and delivering an oral presentation and participating in a productive Q&A; and project management. Classes will be held synchronously online and can technically be attended from anywhere in the world. However, given any research project's requirement that the historian consider the totality of the established literature on a given topic, students must have access to and borrowing privileges from a library, preferably a research library.

HIST 797 DL2 is a distance education section that meets synchronously. Students should expect to meet on the day time scheduled.
