Section Information for Fall 2010
Pompeii was an unremarkable Roman town of perhaps 12,000 inhabitants, but one which has been the subject of closer scrutiny than any other ancient site in the Mediterranean, on account of its sudden and thorough destruction. This course is an exploration of the ancient Romans living in Pompeii and the towns and seaside villas around the Bay of Naples before the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79, and of how they were in effect brought back to life in the 18th century. Their homes, gardens, culture, and way of life will be investigated, as well as their death, rediscovery, and presentation to the modern world.View 1 Other Section of this Course in this Semester »
