This course provides an introduction to the language of the visual arts and a foundation for individual understanding and enjoyment of art. This class will focus on how art communicates, how to analyze and interpret it, and how we can see it as a cultural product that reveals something about the society that produced it. The first part of the course covers the basics of art theory and practice. The second part contextualizes art in history while also interweaving materials and techniques, modes of patronage, social history and cultural context.  This is an asynchronous course. This course meets the Mason Core Arts requirement.

ARTH 101 DL1 is a distance education section that meets asynchronously.
