Section Information for Fall 2012
This course will consider a broad range of artistic expression in colonial North America, beginning with first contact between Native Americans and Europeans, continuing through to the Early Republic. Objects of study will range from burial mounds and New World maps, to colonial portraiture and Greek revival architecture. The class will explore the circulation of art and ideas in the trans-Atlantic world, with an emphasis on cultural exchange and the emergence of national identity. Students will be required to visit a collection of colonial art in the area.Tags:
