Most people have heard of the Harlem Renaissance—a period when Black arts and culture flourished in the 20th century. But did you know that in addition to Harlem, a Black Renaissance was occurring throughout the United States in places like Chicago and Washington, DC? This course looks at the evolution of the Black Renaissance in the arts in 20th century America. Through readings, discussions, film, and museum visits, we will learn how to interpret and appreciate the Black Renaissance in the United States.
