Section Information for Spring 2022
This course will introduce students to the history and practices of art museums, taking advantage of the superb museums in the Washington, DC area. Through our readings, discussions, and museum visits, we will learn about museum history, operations, careers, ethical issues and current controversies. The class will also review the intersection of new technologies and museum collections, exploring the use of 3-D laser scanning and printing. Readings will also introduce issues of cultural representation as expressed through museum exhibitions. The course will end with a consideration of international law regarding collecting, UNESCO’s World Heritage program, and cultural property management worldwide. Several museum visits are required for this course.
