This course explores the art from ancient Mesoamerica (present-day Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras) and South America (primarily present-day Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador) with a focus on the development of artistic styles and cultures in those areas prior to the 16th century. Functional, ceremonial, and decorative art from various cultures, including Maya, Mixtec, Aztec, Moche, and Inka, will be analyzed within their original socio-political context. In-class lectures, activities, and discussions will be supplemented by museum visits and a research paper.
