This course will focus on the art of ancient Egypt. Topics to be investigated may include materials and methods of construction, form, function, and meaning in architecture, the placement and role of writing within Egyptian art, expression of religious/political concepts in art, status of women in Egyptian society, evidence for daily life, the early Greek response to ancient Egypt, as evidenced particularly in the Histories of Herodotus, cult activity and temple building in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, and the historical development of Egyptology following the Napoleonic expedition of 1798. Course requirements may include tests, short papers on reading assignments, class participation and in-class presentations, a research paper, and independent museum visits.
