Section Information for Summer 2019
History is a skills-based major, and in this section of Hist 100 we will work through the essential toolkit of the historian. With an emphasis on close reading of primary sources, and learning to assess these pieces of evidence from the past by setting sources and their authors in context, we will go about building up a repertoire of skills with which students can more effectively analyze and understand the past. Covering a wide chronological range from the ancient world to modernity, we will pay particular attention in our reading and writing to the varied and developing modes of organizing political authority in the European past. Course requirements include two formal essays, a series of shorter informal writing assignments, and daily participation in class discussion.
