This course surveys the formation of the modern world from circa 1300 until contemporary times. It covers major themes of world history encompassing experiences and interactions within and among societies across the globe. The course explores major processes and turning points that impacted the trajectory of global history. It aims to evenly cover major cultural zones with a balanced treatment of notable developments in science and technology, learning, literature and arts, human mobility and demographics, catastrophic events, trade and commerce, social and political organization, agriculture and manufacturing, and faith traditions. Special attention will be paid to the comparison of similar experiences among societies and cultural zones across the globe, and how individual and localized breakthroughs lead to broader global developments.

By focusing on historical experiences that reflect the diversity of Mason’s student body, students will be able to see how their families and communities fit within, and contribute to, global history from the pre-modern period to our present day. This course offers a long-term historical perspective on structural issues challenging our world today, including demographic and environmental changes, national and global inequalities, and the underrepresentation of marginalized groups. Students will gain an understanding of how interconnections and inter-dependencies have been forged through the global movement of people, pathogens, goods, and ideas. Limited to three attempts.
