Engaging the subject of the rise of East Asia in the current "Pacific century," this course is an introduction to history of China, Japan, and Korea from premodern to early modern era. The class will explore intellectual, cultural, social, political, and economic history of traditional East Asia with focus on the interpretation of primary historical materials. The lectures and discussions will also adopt multimedia approach, such as interactive website, film, documentary, drama, short video, and animation. Among others, the pertinent topics to be covered in the class are: the mythological and archaeological origins; philosophy, religion, and ethics; political and economic management and organization; war, peace, and conflict; international relations and diplomacy; trade, commerce, and industry; scientific and technological innovation; cultural, artistic, aesthetic, and literary development; social class, status, and hierarchy; family and gender relations; and modes of work, life, and entertainment.
