This course is an introduction to some of the major themes in the history of East Asia from roughly 1800 to present, with an emphasis on the twentieth century. The primary focus of this course will be on the geographical area encompassed by China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. Issues covered will include imperialism, nationalism, World War II, and the Cold War.
