Section Information for Spring 2011

Ancient Greece is one part of the classical Greco-Roman foundation of Western Civilization. When we study ancient Greece, we primarily think of the history of the Athenians, since their culture influenced our literature and politics so much. However, there is much more than just the city-state of Athens. The Homeric tradition, the Olympics, and the “Spartan” Spartans are all part of this classical heritage. We will embark on an odyssey, and sail our way through Greek history until about 399 BCE when Socrates chose death over exile from his polis. We will also look at the artistic and architectural heritage that influenced future generations.
