This course will be a critical examination of the emergence, growing pains and maturity of the many Greek communities scattered throughout the Mediterranean—Athens, Sparta and Macedon in particular.  We will trace their experiments in democracies, oligarchies, and monarchies, and read deeply into their literary, historical and philosophical traditions.
