Section Information for Fall 2020
This course is on the history of Japan from around 1600 to 1945. The course begins with the founding of the Tokugawa shogunate and the subsequent changes that made Japan the most urbanized society in the world by 1700. We then examine how the threat of Western imperialism led to the overthrow of the Shogunate and stimulated a dramatic program of modernization following the Meiji Restoration. Finally, the course will trace the path by which this modern, democratic nation embarked upon aggressive imperial expansion in Asia and a destructive total war with the United States.
HIST 356 DL1 is a distance education section that meets synchronously. Students should expect to be online on the days and times scheduled.
