Section Information for Summer 2021

This course will consider how the wars in US History have affected the society at large. War is a catalyst for dramatic changes, both obvious and subtle. We will discuss changes in the economy, gender, race, ideas of citizenship and adulthood, perceptions of warriors, and the use of the concept of war and warriors in civilian spaces. Students will read selections from several current historical works. This course will have regular synchronous meetings where we will discuss the readings and the ideas drawn from them.

HIST 370 A01 is a distance education section that meets synchronously. Students should expect to meet on the days and time scheduled.

Examines war and American society from the colonial period to the post-Cold War era, including how military institutions, war, and the preparation for war have affected American society, and how Americans have thought about military service, experience war, and made peace through their history. Special emphasis on civil-military relations and the role of war and militarism in American culture. Limited to three attempts.
