This upper-level undergraduate course will attempt the nearly impossible: an exploration of two millennia of Christian history around the globe in one semester! We shall read together, discuss, and write reflections on pairs of primary historical sources each week to illustrate key binary themes chronologically, including the following: Holy Scriptures (Hebrew & Greek); Jews & Gentiles (The Acts of the Apostles); Church & World (Epistle of Diognetus & St. Cyprian of Carthage); Trinity & Christ (St. Gregory of Nyssa & St. Leo, Pope of Rome), Hagiography & Spiritual Autobiography (Lives of Martyrs & St. Augustine’s Confessions); Church Expansion West, North, East, & South (The Nestorian Tablet in China, Life of St. Anskar by Bishop Rimbert, Primary Chronicle of Rus’); Icons & Cathedrals; Heart & Mind (Francis of Assisi & Thomas Aquinas); Faith & Science (Martin Luther & Galileo Galilei); Transoceanic Missions to the Americas, India, & East Asia (Bartolomé de las Casas & Francis Xavier); Revival & Renewal (Jonathan Edwards & John Wesley); Collaboration & Resistance in Nazi Germany & the Soviet Union; Peoples & Race (Vatican Council II, Lumen Gentium, & Martin Luther King, Jr., Sermons Letters); and Women & Ministry.
