The course is a global survey of burial practices and the ritual traditions associated with those practices.  The survey reveals on a global scale the cross-cultural similarities, continuities and changes in burial practices over time. We will explore the causes behind the changes observed and consider the reasons for similarities and continuities in practice and tradition.  The framework described provides a context within which to introduce the student to various interpretive methodology.  Work with peer-reviewed articles and short-answer writing assignments are designed to prepare the student to apply an interpretive method in the production of a final 10-page analytical composition.
