Section Information for Fall 2012

This course is a study of the history of Roman Britain from the time of the invasion of Julius Caesar (55/54 BCE) and the subjugation of the Britons by Claudius to the withdrawal of the Roman legions in the 5th century CE and the subsequent history and legend of King Arthur. Within this chronological context we will examine the Celtic and provincial British culture that developed in Britain: including towns, roads, baths, villas and forts along with such structures as Stonehenge and Hadrian’s Wall. We will also look at the British relationships with the Irish (Scoti), the Picts, and the Saxons.
