Section Information for Fall 2023

This course will explore key events, key personalities, and the fierce competition among faiths and dynasties in the Eastern Medieval world.  Join us as we shift our focus to the Eastern Roman Empire, based in the new capital city of Constantinople (aka, Byzantium; now, Istanbul).  This Roman empire was the political center of Christendom from the 4th – 15th centuries CE.  Our shift eastward will also enable us to define the Middle Ages through the rise of Islam and the complex networks that develop among Christian kings and emperors, church officials, as well as the great Caliphs and Sultans of the Islamic world.  As other peoples—the Slavs and Kievan Rus’ especially—enter the arena, we will discuss the long-term impact of their assimilation with the Mediterranean world.
