Section Information for Fall 2019

This course examines historiography—the history of doing history. We will be paying particular attention to the historical subfields that emerged since the mid-Nineteenth Century (for example: the histories of race and ethnicities; gender and sexuality; nationalism and imperialism; violence and militarism; environment and science… ). Since we cannot look at all of these, we will search for the underlying processes behind new histories. Besides the emergence of new areas of scholarship, we will also be interested in new methods and theories, such as how history has been influenced by other disciplines and changing notions about the nature of historical knowledge. As we chart changing practices we will be looking both at how contemporary concerns shaped historical scholarship and at debates within and among historical camps. Attention to the ways that historians choose and interpret their sources, efforts to expand the realm of sources and the ways to use them, as well as changing forms of presentation will also form part of our discussions
