Section Information for Fall 2022

This course examines modern trends, theories, methodologies, and problems in historical analysis as a means of introducing graduate students to the academic practice of history. The course is divided into three broad sections. First, we will examine the institutional and conceptual development of the historical profession over time and explore the implications and effects of this development. Second, we will read and analyze a series of influential works that have profoundly influenced current ideas and practices. Finally, we will engage with a handful of more recent works that exemplify important aspects of the current state of the field and suggest ways in which it might move in the future. Along the way we will seek to address a number of important, often interrelated themes, including the relationship between academic and popular approaches to history, the challenges of writing the history of people who left few sources of their own, and the ways in which history as a field has been implicated in shaping and reinforcing power relationships in the modern world.
