Section Information for Fall 2010

Not simply the opposite of work, leisure encompasses a range of usually pleasurable volitional activities that—besides providing amusement or relaxation—aid in the construction and maintenance of social boundaries and cultural identities. This graduate colloquium will examine the relationship between conceptions of time, leisure, and work, beginning with a survey of leisure activities in early America. Subsequent readings and class discussions will focus on specific topics—drinking, holidays, sport, tourism, vacations, hobbies, and commercial amusements—to examine how leisure and its constituencies evolved and diversified in various American social contexts over roughly three centuries. (This course fulfills the Origins to 1861 distribution requirement in US history.)
