In America and the Sea, we will investigate the myriad ways in which the history of the United States is bound up with the sea. We will consider Native uses of the sea before colonization, maritime trade, fishing, whaling, shipbuilding, exploration, and naval operations. We’ll touch on themes such as militarism, diplomacy, commerce, imperialism, and many other ideas. We’ll be reading texts, listening to podcasts, exploring digital projects, and considering many other forms of scholarly communication as part of our exploration of America and the Sea.
