This course surveys the cultural history of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, when Americans grappled with many off the same problems or issues  that we face today—rapid and radical technological change; large scale immigration; evolving notions of racial justice and changing notions of gender and sex. The course will mix “classics” in the filed with more recent interpretive work.

Credits: 3

Examines history of United States from 1877 to 1918, with attention to history of reform movements and politics, and social history of the period. Familiarizes with major issues and historical literature of the period. May not be repeated for credit.
Registration Restrictions:

Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy, Graduate, Junior Plus, Non-Degree or Senior Plus.

Enrollment is limited to Graduate, Non-Degree or Undergraduate level students.

Students in a Non-Degree Undergraduate degree may not enroll.
