BA in History

Maeve Flanagan Shumate, 2022

Maeve Flanagan Shumate

How did you decide on the history major?

I’ve loved learning about history and spent most of my time in museums as a child so it had a great effect on me growing up.

Are you minoring or double majoring in anything else? If so, how do the two work together – or  separately?

I am currently majoring in history with a concentration in public history and double minoring in art history and Italian.

What have you learned in a history class that really surprised you/changed your perspective?

One thing I’ve learned through my history classes is to never look at something only one time. The second, third or fourth time you look at something, you can perceive it in many different ways that you may have not seen from the beginning.

Tell us about your dream occupation…

Working in a museum and being surrounded by culture and art is probably the best way I could think I could ever spend my life.

Have you had any internships? Or interesting jobs or volunteer experience? Tell us about it/them.

I’ve had an internship at the German-American Heritage Museum in DC, which I commute to every week.

Any accomplishments you’re proud of? Opportunities you’ve taken advantage of? Brag a little!

I am the president of the Italian Club on campus and recently joined the national honor society for the History department.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

I moved to Europe (Italy and Germany) when I was five years old and did not come back to the U.S. until I was 18. Because of that I had never been to a Walmart and I currently don’t have a driver’s license. People are always really surprised to hear that because it’s out of the ordinary. I'm also half Southern Italian so I can speak Italian and the local dialect of my town.
