Impacting our Students

Our faculty bring the knowledge and skills of first-rate scholars to the classroom. We transmit the excitement of historical and art historical discovery to students. Eight of our professors have won the university's highest accolade for teaching, the Teaching Excellence Award.

Studying history or art history at GMU prepares students for successful careers; the proof is our alumni, who have successful careers in museums, education, the law, business, and many other arenas.

The department offers courses covering every major world region and chronological period for students at every level of instruction: introductory general education courses, upper division courses for advanced students, and graduate courses for our M.A. and Ph.D. students.

Our undergraduate majors in history can choose from a range of concentrations, including public history, digital history, global history, and U.S. history. Our Art History MA program prepares students for careers in museums, arts education, galleries, and auction houses. Our Ph.D. program in history produces scholars who thrive in academia and beyond.

We are one of the few departments in the country to provide training in digital humanities, offering a range of DH courses for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a graduate certificate in Digital Public Humanities.
