Overview

The History MA program is at the
forefront of both traditional historical study and innovative digital approaches to the past. As a student, you will select from an unmatched variety of course topics while also choosing an area of historical specialization that accommodates your interests and furthers your career objectives. Our nationally-recognized faculty provides high level academic training, and we offer cutting-edge digital and applied history offerings and internships that will prepare you for careers that reach far beyond academia.

Our graduates follow a variety of career paths.  Some of our students plan for careers as academic historians and have successfully used our MA degree as a springboard to a History PhD program, either here at Mason or at another university.  Others have taken our Applied History track and have found jobs after graduation in distinguished public history institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. Holocaust Museum, and the National Park Service.  Students in the New Media track of the MA program have been highly successful in securing jobs at both public institutions like the Library of Congress and in private companies such as Blackboard, Inc.  Other students who already have full-time jobs—in government, the military sector, non-profit, education—have used our MA degree to advance within their existing careers.

Students come to our program with diverse career objectives, and we have designed our program with that diversity in mind.  We view this diversity as one of our program’s greatest strengths. Our students take classes in which they discuss history alongside future academics, public historians, teachers, military officers, non-profit professionals, government officials and entrepreneurs.  This is a uniquely stimulating experience, and one that can be tailored to fit a variety of career goals.
