Scott Ackerman, who received his MA in History from GMU in 2011, has successfully defended his dissertation at the Lehman Center, City University of New York. Scott's dissertation, entitled "We Are Abolitionizing The West': The Union Army and the Implementation of Federal Emancipation Policy, 1861-1865," looks at Union officers in order to explore the relationship between emancipation policy coming out of Washington and the daily process of freeing slaves in the South. Scott will be awarded the PHD at commencement exercises in May 2019.
