Having been awarded the ACLS Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Research Fellow-ship in Buddhist Studies, Professor Robert DeCaroli was on research leave last year. He had originally planned to spend much of the year in India but, like everyone else, his plans were cancelled by the pandemic. Instead of traveling he spent the year writing and doing archival research on early South Asian archaeology. The research sparked a new interest in locating evidence for early magical rituals associated with women. He is also co-editing a volume on Buddhism and the five senses in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Asian Art.
