Dr. Sheri Ann Huerta, adjunct professor in the Honors College and History and Art History Department, recently presented her research at the 2022 British Group of Early American Historians (BGEAH) conference in Cardiff, Wales. Her paper titled "'Without Lawful Permission to Remain': Virginia's 1806 Removal Act and Its Effects on Free(d) Black Residency" explores the innovative and adaptive legal claims developed by Black Virginians in the General Assembly, in county courthouses, and in local neighborhoods to challenge laws restricting Black residency.
