Three History PhD students were hooded at the University Commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 14, after completing the requirements for the doctoral program in recent months. The first is J. Clarke Bursley, who completed his dissertation, From Moral Education to National Mobilization: The Imperial Japanese Army's Campaigns to Shape Japan, 1872-1944, under the direction of Dr. Brian Platt. The second is Kenneth S. Capps, whose dissertation was entitled, "A Fantasy with Implications Concerning Reality": How Marvel and DC Comics Helped Establish the "Good War" myth. Dr. Capps' PhD advisor was Dr. Christopher Hamner. The third student is Janet Hammond, who completed her dissertation, Polite Children: Children's Education in the Early Modern British Atlantic, under the direction of Dr. Jessica Otis.
Dr. Bursley, Dr. Capps, and Dr. Hammond (pictured above with their advisors) are the 109th, 110th, and 111th students to complete the History PhD program since its inception in 2002.
