The department welcomed several new faculty in Fall 2006. Professor Marty Sherwin came to Mason from Tufts University. Professor Sherwin recently won the Pulitzer Prize for his biography of J. Robert Openheimer, American Prometheus: The Tiumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Professor Sherwin is teaching a course in “Camera/Cold War: Documentary Films in History” and the “Cuban Missile Crisis.”

Also joining the faculty are Professors Michael Bottoms (PhD, UCLA, US political history) and Claudia Verhoeven (PhD, UCLA, 19th century Russian terrorism). Professor Bottoms will teach “Race in 19th Century America,” Claudia Verhoeven will teach “History of Western Civilization” course as well as the “The Culture of Terrorism.” Professor Margaret Richardson (PhD, Virginia Commonwealth University, 2005) who joins the art historians, will teach both “Art Now” and “Survey of Western Art.”
