Alumna earns history PhD at Warwick

On July 20, 2011 Jessica Legnini (BA Art History '03 and MA History '05) successfully completed her PhD at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. Her dissertation, titled "Class, Identity and Emulation: American Blackface Minstrelsy and Its British Audiences, 1843-1847," examines the impact of the Virginia Minstrels and Ethiopian Serenaders in centers of the Atlantic world.  In the first half of the nineteenth century these cultural groups traveled from New York and Boston, respectively, to Great Britain, where they performed before packed houses and shaped class, racial, and national identities during the Victorian age.
