Alumna Named Head of Mason Special Collections and Archives

George Mason University has announced the appointment of Yvonne A. Carignan to the position of Head, Special Collections and Archives Department – effective August 25, 2011. Yvonne has been serving as the Kiplinger Research Library Director and Head of Collections for the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. since 2007 where she managed special collections and archives development, public service, outreach, donor relations, internship and volunteer programs, archives processing, and bibliographic control for collections.   From 1977 to 2007, Yvonne was at the University of Maryland – College Park, where she served in various capacities in the university’s library system, first as Assistant Department Head/Brittle Materials and Reformatting Unit Head (Acting Preservation Officer) and then, as Preservation Department Head.  Prior, Yvonne was with the Alexandria (VA) Public Library in charge of Lloyd House (Alexandria’s history research library and archives).  Earlier positions in her career included service in public libraries in Norfolk, VA, Lincoln, NE, and Prince Georges Co., MD.

Yvonne’s educational background includes:  MA in History from George Mason University; MS in Library Science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill;  BA (History major) from Virginia Commonwealth University.
