Ben Cowan received his PhD from UCLA in 2010. Before coming to Mason, he served as an assistant professor in the history department at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Ben's principal interests include morality, sexuality, right-wing politics, masculinity, modernization, and authoritarianism, particularly in the context of the Cold War and of imperialism.  Currently at work on a book manuscript entitled "The Secret History of Subversion: Sex, Modernity, and the Brazilian National Security State," he has published related research in the "Journal of the History of Sexuality" and the "Hispanic American Historical Review." His second book project investigates the emergence of an evangelical Right in Brazil during the late 1970s and 1980s. Dr. Cowan also joins the Department of History and Art History as an assistant professor.
