Barnes' Book is a Finalist for 2013 Central Eurasian Studies Society Award

Professor Steven Barnes’ recent book, Death and Redemption: The Gulag and the Shaping of Soviet Society (Princeton University Press), has been named as a finalist for the 2013 Central Eurasian Studies Society book award.  Each year the CESS Award is presented to the author of the research monograph, published in the preceding two years, that represents the most important contribution to Central Eurasian studies.  The prize will be announced at the CESS annual conference in Madison, Wisconsin, this October.  This is the second major recognition Barnes has received for this book: last year it was given the Baker-Burton prize, which is awarded by the European History Section of the Southern Historical Association.
