Professor Deshmukh, who retired in Spring of 2015,  after a very long and distinguished career at GMU, specializes in German intellectual history. Her book Max Liebermann:  Modern Art and Modern Germany  is the first English language examination of Liebermann's life and work.

Liebermann, who typically worked in an impressionist style. was a pivotal figure in German artistic modernism and a prominent anti fascist. Professor Deshmukh's book will bring his work and its context to  a wider audience. One reviewer concludes, "At long last, a monograph in English on Max Liebermann, one of Germany’s most important cultural figures of the modern era.
