In this course, you will examine the historical development of the modern United States from 1877—the end of Reconstruction—to the present day. We will discuss the people who lived through these dynamic times and the choices they made that have brought us to where we are now. Topics will include Gilded Age tensions between capital and labor, westward expansion, the World Wars, the turbulent nineteen-sixties, and more. Methodologically, you will learn how to engage with historical evidence, especially primary sources and scholarly secondary sources.
