Section Information for Fall 2025
This course will explore the early history of Christian encounters with Islam, through the lens of the Eastern Roman Empire, whose capital of Constantinople (now Istanbul) stood as the political and cultural center of the Christian world for over 1,100-years. We will cover the Christian emperors of Constantinople, their complex relationship with the Caliphates and Sultanates of the Islamic world, and the increasingly hostile Catholic West. There will be a special emphasis on spiritual traditions, cultural movements, and the rich spiritual and political literature of the era.
