This course surveys major developments in Western art from the early Renaissance through the twentieth century. It examines representative works of art from major artists, cultures, periods, artistic contexts, and styles. Through weekly units composed of reading assignments and illustrated lectures, weekly quizzes, two exams, and a National Gallery Museum visit and research project, this course builds a foundational knowledge of Western art and art history. This course has no prerequisites and welcomes students without prior knowledge of art history.
