Section Information for Spring 2026

This course examines the role of photography in creating and documenting the Black experience in America. Using a special edition of "Aperture" magazine on this topic called "Vision and Justice," we will study the work of Black intellectuals, photographers, and cultural figures to learn how photography has shaped different perspectives on concepts of justice in the United States. Through shared readings, guest lectures, and museum visits, students will cultivate strong visual analysis and critical thinking skills to improve their ability to interpret and understand visual culture's role in a democratic society.
