This course explores the history of modern and contemporary Chinese art and architecture in transnational contexts from the late 19th century to the present. We will examine how artistic practice and cultural production both shaped and were shaped by political, economic, and social transformations beginning in the late imperial era. While the material will be presented chronologically, broader themes will include the entanglement of tradition, modernity, and globalization, art and politics, artistic patronage, identities of artists, and gender in art-making, etc. We will examine art works across a wide range of media, conventional and non-conventional, including painting, printing making, photography, video, performance, time-based art, site-specific works, as well as buildings and urban environments.
Students in this class will hone their critical thinking, research, and writing skills. They will also develop knowledge of modern and contemporary art and architecture in China and Chinese diasporas that draw upon Chinese traditions and philosophies while maintaining close connections to global art practices.
